AFRICA REGION

Short History

The Region was officially formed during the 7th World Council held in Antananarivo, Madagascar with the election of the Regional Team beiging the first Regional Executive Mrs. Béatrice Johnson member of the Association des Guides du Togo. Until around 1988, the Region multiplied visits and awareness-raising country by country. The Mozet World Council of February 1994, it was decided to decentralise the functioning of the regions, based on the principle of subsidiarity. Renée N´Diaye had been appointed the first Regional Executive for Africa in the new configuration.

Regional meetings

  • February 1970, first session for chaplain and advisers in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Its theme was “Guiding and society, African reality and traditions”. The Central African Republic, the Ivory Coast, Chad and Cameroon participated.

  • August 1973, meeting or Guide leaders, members of national teams and chaplain for Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Chad, Cameroon, Togo and Dahomey (Benin) in the Ivory Coast. It topics were “How to make the various age groups aware that Christ liberates and fulfils us”;How to move a Guide to spontaneously liver her Christian faith at camp and in daily life”; and “How to live one´s faith in the African context”, under the overall theme “Spiritual activities in African Guiding”.

  • December 1976 Regional meeting in Dakar (Senegal) of leaders, chaplain and sisters advisers, from five countries: Senegal, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), the Ivory Coast, Benin and Togo, on “Approaches to the liberating education and evangelisation in the African countries ofs today”.

  • April 1979 Meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on ICCG and Faith education, attended by Benin, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Togo, the Ivory Coast and Senegal.

  • September 1988, mereting in Kigali, Rwanda of around 30
    leaders, advisers and chaplains from Benin, Burundi, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Madagascar, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo and Uganda. Its theme was: “Guide leaders, sister advisers and chaplains from Benin, Burundi, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Madagascar, Rwanda, Senegal, Todo and Uganda. Its theme was: “Guide leaders, sister advisers and chaplains: all responsible for faith education in our Girl Guide communities”.

  • December 1990-January 1991: Central and East sub-regional meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, attended by Uganda, Chad, Rwanda, Madagascar and Tanzania. Its theme was “Faith and the path to inculturation in Guiding”.

  • October 1998, Bohicon, Benin “Hope I” meeting with Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Togo, Rwanda and the Central African Republic. Others countriees were invited such as Cemeroon, Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad ando Burundi. Its theme was “Creating women hope for Africa”.

  • May 2006, Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Meeting of representatives from the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Benin and Chad. Its theme was “Guiding, faith and peace”.

  • April 1979 Meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on ICCG and Faith education, attended by Benin, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Togo, the Ivory Coast and Senegal.

  • November 2008, Burkina Faso. Training meetin for trainers. Iths theme was “The Christian faith and solidarity”.

  • June 2010, Antananarivo, Madagascar. Meeting of commissioners on “Women disciples and missionaries on thee Guiding path”.

  • August 2012, Lomé, Togo. Training seminar for general and international commissioners and chaplains. Its theme was “Men and women He created them”. Participation of Madagascar, the Ivory Coast, Congo-Brazzaville, Guinea, the Central African Republic, Togo, Rwanda, Benin, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Chad.

  • August 2013, Benin, Meeting of 25 ICCG Representatives,
    commissioners and chaplains from 10 countries: Benin, Madagascar, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, the Central African Republic, Senegal,Togo, Rwanda, Benin and Burkina Faso
